Spiritual Direction

A Process and a Relationship
Spiritual direction is a process intended to bring light to the presence of God in one’s life. The context of spiritual direction is a trusting relationship between two people, the director and the seeker. God, however, is the true “director” and always a third presence when director and seeker meet. Although the term “direction” is generally accepted, other words such as “mentoring,” “companioning” or “spiritual friendship” are also used.

Not Counseling—Not Therapy
Counseling, including pastoral counseling, and therapy are usually entered into for the purpose of healing. In spiritual direction, the focus is on the ongoing discovery of God’s presence in the life of the seeker. Spiritual directors will refer seekers to appropriate professional for help with challenging relationships or emotional issues.

Is Spiritual Direction Right for Me?
People are drawn to spiritual direction for many reasons—to understand life’s meaning, to gain a sense of discernment, and to live more fully and attentively. Many people enter spiritual direction because of specific situations, such as life transitions or loss of a loved one. An inner longing for God often underlies these outward motives.  Seekers often express the following desires:
•    To listen to my inner voice
•    To gain clarity in my life work
•    To feel more alive
•    To develop a spiritual practice
•    To have a more intimate relationship with God.

What can I expect in Spiritual Direction?
Once you have found a spiritual director, expect to meet regularly, usually once a month. Your director may ask you to commit to three or four sessions, then evaluate the relationship and discern if you want to continue. Spiritual direction sessions are generally 50 minutes long. Certified directors generally charge a fee, usually between $55 and $70 per session. Some use a sliding scale.

You can expect to have help clarifying your life experiences and values as well as indentifying specific examples of God’s presence in your life. You decide what to focus on in each session. You should feel to ask questions about your faith and reflect on your relationships and career choices. Your director will assist you with questions and comments to help you notice the Holy Spirit at work in your everyday life.

St. John’s has names of several certified spiritual directors and will be happy to find one that is right for you. Call the church office at 612-922-0396 for a referral.
