Spiritual & Educational Small Groups
Amidst the many claims on our time and energies, opportunities for meaningful conversations are rare. St. John’s is dedicated to those creating space for those deeper conversations. These small groups are meant to deepen spiritual understanding and insight, as well as deepen friendships.
Wednesday Spirituality Group Wednesdays at 12:00 pm | Library | Begins September 22 The Wednesday Spirituality Group meets weekly to read and reflect on the Bible, a book, or poetry or to participate in varied spiritual exercises. In the past we have discussed the Sunday Gospel and books such as Let Your Life Speak by Parker Palmer, Christ of the Celts by J. Philip Newell and Jesus Freak by Sara Miles, and spent time praying with icons and images. The group decides what we want to do as we move through the year. Discussion is lively, insights and understandings are diverse and the caring for one another intimate. Join us! Contact:

Sunday Book Discussion We read books that prompt discussion of spiritual, ethical and religious issues. Typically, we read a chapter to discuss for each meeting. This fall we'll read Christianity: The First Three Thousand Years by Dairmaid MacCullough. We meet every other Sunday from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the home of Dan and Ann Gifford. Meetings include a discussion of the book, dessert, fellowship and personal sharing. Resumes September 19. Contact:

J-guys Men's Group We are a Bible study group which also studies non-biblical readings and poetry on spirituality and social justice. Typical fare includes an eclectic mix of lectio divina or close reading of a Bible text, prayer, “check-in”, and free-flowing fellowship fueled by wine, cheese, coffee, and/or dessert. In the best Anglican tradition, we represent a big tent theologically, so come prepared for some unorthodox interpretations! Resumes September 7 at 6:30pm. Contact:

Encountering the Gospel Sunday Small Group 10:10-10:50, Room 4 of the Sunday School Wing For those who hunger for more in-depth, personal conversation on Sunday mornings, a small group will gather to reflect on the morning’s Gospel text. It’s not a sermon discussion, but instead, a careful reading of the gospel, using ways old and new to unpack the meaning for ourselves. The group will be facilitated on a rotating basis by four or five St Johns members.
If you have a question about one of these small groups or would like more information, call the church office at (612) 922-0396.
