David Pharris
Q: In what ways do you share your musical gifts at St. John's? A: I play the clarinet occasionally at Sunday services, recently performing Mozart's Kegelstatt Trio with my wife, Rachel Harrison, on viola and Chad on piano. I've also performed on the annual Harmony for Habitats fundraiser concerts. And I have very magnanimously allowed my daughter Georgia to perform at several services on piano.
Q: What kind of music do you listen to? A: I listen to many different types of music. I've been listening to the Current (radio station) a lot lately. I'm also a huge fan of Pat Metheny, Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck, and Alison Krauss. And, of course, I listen to a lot of classical music.
Q: Do you have a favorite musical artist, song or composition? A: Every now and then I go through a kind of Richard Strauss lollapalooza-fest, and I just can't get enough of Die Rosenkavalier and the Four Last Songs.
Q: Is there any particular music or musician that has influenced you? A: My dad was my first band director and clarinet teacher, and he really encouraged me to pursue music as a career.
Q: What other musical endeavors do you pursue outside of St. John's? A: I play 2nd Clarinet in the Minnesota Orchestra and the Grand Teton Music Festival.
Q: If you could meet any musical person, past or present, who would it be? A: There are literally hundreds, but I guess I would have to say Mozart so I could thank him for his incredible clarinet writing.
Q: What is something people might be surprised to know about you? A: People might be surprised to know that if I weren't playing in the Minnesota Orchestra I would be the starting first baseman for the Minnesota Twins.
