Spiritual & Educational Small Groups

Amidst the many claims on our time and energies, opportunities for meaningful conversations are rare. St. John’s is dedicated to those creating space for those deeper conversations. These small groups are meant to deepen spiritual understanding and insight, as well as deepen friendships.

Wednesday Spirituality Group
Wednesdays at 12:00 pm | Library
We gather each Wednesday at noon to discuss the spiritual life, aided by a scripture study, spiritual exercises or a book we read together. In the past year, we’ve studied "Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount" and Karen Armstrong’s new book, "12 Steps to a Compassionate Life" and shared poetry. Join us! Sunday Book Discussion
Sundays at 7:00 pm | 4016 Linden Hills Blvd.
Our first gathering is Sunday, September 25.  Everyone interested or curious is encouraged to come to our meetings (or just one of them).  We will be discussing the first 100 pages of "All Things Shining: Reading the Western Classics to Find Meaning in a Secular Age" by Hubert Dreyfus and Sean Dorrance.Contact: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. J-Folk Group
Tuesdays at 7:00 pm | 11054 Bluestem Lane, Eden Prairie
J Folk is a fluid men and women's Bible study.  Fluid means our circle is open for you to join us and stay, or to visit for one or more sessions.  We meet once or twice monthly, taking time off in summer. We gather in the homes of members, but you do not have to host to be part of the group.  Typical fare includes an eclectic mix of close reading of a Bible text, prayer, and "check-in".  This year, we're planning to read about violence, evil, and the Christian response.  Our discussions help us get to what the Gospel is calling us to do.   In the best Anglican tradition, we share differences of opinion without fisticuffs, so come prepared for some unorthodox interpretations! Fiction Group
Second Friday of each month
A group that gathers to discuss an eclectic variety of fiction relating to spiritual themes. We meet on the second Friday of each month to discuss either a book or a movie. Books are selected by members of the group.  Meetings rotate between members September thru May.  We’ll start with Truman by David McCullough.  Meet at the home of Susan Tapp, 4031 Vincent Ave. So., Mpls.  Contact: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Encountering Today's Scripture
Sunday Small Group 10:10-10:50, Room 4 of the Sunday School Wing
A quiet space on Sunday mornings to encounter the gospel text and its word to us. We light a candle, sit in a circle, welcome latecomers, and excuse early leavers. We use a variety of practices to open our hearts and stimulate thought. Our conversations about what we hear and how we respond are casual, interactive, sometimes serious, often humorous. Contemplative Prayer Community
Sunday evenings, 7:00 pm, St. John's chapel
A  45-minute service includes prayers, poetry, scripture, chanting and 20 minutes of silent prayer. Led by members of the community, this service welcomes all who find their way to the chapel entrance on 42nd Street. Though our prayer includes silence, our leave-taking on Sunday evenings is often filled with conversation and laughter. Contact: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
